Designing Your Custom Home with Natural Light

Achieve Natural Light in Your Custom Home with the Right Touch

Natural light is such an important component to consider when designing custom homes in the Dallas and Fort Worth Metroplex. The luminous effects of natural light not only promote energy efficiency when used properly, but can add a unique ambiance and personality to your custom home.

What is the Best Way to Design Natural Light Into Your Home?

There are several good ways to use and increase natural light into the design of your new custom home. A typical method is to use skylights in ceilings or even design light wells that can completely change the atmosphere within a room.

We also often use a series of extra large windows together or sometimes we will create a complete glass wall with a technique of very large glass panes and structural glazing. This particular method is called “Butt-Glazing” as these large, thick panes of glass are butted against each other (or very close together) and use a clear silicone in that common joint.

Another method is to integrate an indoor living area with an outdoor living area. You can accomplish this by using a giant sliding door system to further unify the two areas. These large doors slide out of the way or can be built to fold back to actually bring your outdoor and interior spaces together. These are not the standard Sliding Door Units that many are people used to. They are extremely well-built and can be purchased with seemingly ever-increasing heights to make the interior spaces feel even that much larger.

If you look carefully at the photo above of this technique in one of our custom homes, you might be able to see a faint vertical line, but no mullions or dividers are needed with this method. This can add uninterrupted views of the spectacular outdoors, while it also allows significant amounts of natural light into interior spaces.

We have used this concept in one of our luxury custom homes in Westlake TX . The effect of the natural light for the interior space is great and having the ability to bring the indoor and outdoor spaces together in good weather makes it an unbelievable positive.

When considering using large windows or doors, placement is key and should be carefully considered when designing a custom home. You don’t want to have to use curtains or blinds on expensive windows or doors, so it’s important to make sure you’re protected from the neighbors view by your landscape or the layout of your floor plan.
